1960s
Wirt A. Hines, M.D. '68, practices plastic surgery in Salt Lake City, Utah, and is president of the Utah State Plastic Surgery Society for the year 2000. He has appeared on The Montel Williams Show.

Carlos A. Suarez, M.D. '68, has been elected as president of the South Florida Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. The college has approximately 600 members in Palm Beach, Broward, Monroe, and Miami-Dade Counties and is made up of surgeons of all specialties. The American College of Surgeons is an international organization with over 60,000 members worldwide and is the most prestigious society in the surgical specialty.

Cappy Rothman, M.D. '69, has published his first postmortem sperm retrieval in 1980 and recently had reported the first birth four years after the retrieval using 1UF/1CS.

1970s
Manuel Peñalver, M.D., '77, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, has been promoted to chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Under his leadership, Dr. Peñalver envisions this department becoming one of the best in the country, attracting quality physicians to the faculty and expanding the department's research and educational base. In addition to his chairmanship responsibilities, Dr. Peñalver will play a significant role in the ongoing development of the school's community relations and international health initiative, especially given his high profile locally and internationally with OB/GYN healthcare providers.

Mitchel S. Berger, M.D. '79, chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery and director of the Brain Tumor Research Center at the University of California, San Francisco, was cited in an article addressing the abnormalities in chromosomes and how they can offer powerful clues for predicting tumors. The article appeared in USA Today.

1980s
Liane Colsky, M.D. '82, was appointed chairperson of the Public Affairs Committee of the Southern California Psychiatric Society and was named "Member of the Year" of the Greater Los Angeles chapter of the National Speakers Association. Dr. Colsky also was featured on KZLA radio's The Sunday Show and is a frequent guest on WROW radio.

Jeffrey M. Starkman, M.D. '83, is a staff anesthesiologist at Brandon Hospital in Brandon, Florida, a 250-bed hospital just east of Tampa.

Steven M. Helfman, M.D. '84, was appointed clinical director of anesthesiology at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He and his family reside in nearby Roswell, Georgia.

Jay Dennis, M.D. '87, has joined the University of Miami faculty as an assistant professor of clinical orthopaedics with the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation after recently completing his fellowship in hand and microvascular surgery at the University. His office is in the hand center at the University's Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Dr. Dennis also is a member of the Orthopaedic Research Society and a candidate member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

In Memoriam

Mr. Kandel photoWilliam I. Kandel, M.D. '57, a highly respected family physician, died June 9, 1999, at his home with his family in Auburn, California. He was 68 years old. Dr. Kandel began his 40 years of family medical practice with Los Angeles Kaiser Permenente, served two years with the USAF Medical Corps, Clinton, Oklahoma, and later developed a family physician private practice in Huntington Beach, California. During the past two years Dr. Kandel was an interim physician at numerous northern California health centers including Chapa-de Indian Health Program, Placer County Health Center, Nova Care, and Sierra Care Physicians.

Dr. Kandel is survived by his wife, Nancy Whitson Kandel; his son, Robert Marc Kandel; daughter, Dr. Joan Ellen Kandel; daughter-in-law, Dr. Kristin Lorraine Graziano; stepson, Daniel Lane Downs, and family; step daughter, Debra Louise Young and family; and several cousins in the San Francisco area. Memorial donations may be made in Dr. Kandel's name to the Sutter Faith Auburn Hospice and Foothill Community Church of Religious Science.

Joan A. Berninger, B.S. '66, M.D. '70, died on March 22, 1999, at the age of 54. She was elected chief resident in psychiatry at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Berninger practiced medicine in the style of a country doctor and stuck by her patients, regardless of their financial circumstances. Her practice was based in Boca Raton, Florida, and for years, she was the only woman psychiatrist between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. She is survived by her 12-year-old son, Michael.
