June 22, 2012 — The SONHS today announced the creation of the Helene Fuld Health Trust Scholarship Fund for students enrolled in the Accelerated Second Degree Baccalaureate Program.
The University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies today announced the creation of the Helene Fuld Health Trust Scholarship Fund for students enrolled in the Accelerated Second Degree Baccalaureate Program. The award provides both immediate funding and establishes an endowment which will provide ongoing support in perpetuity. This generous award from the Helene Fuld Health Trust will provide students the opportunity to attain their bachelor degrees in twelve months and stem the shortage of nurses.
“We appreciate the recognition bestowed upon our program by the Helene Fuld Health Trust to offer prospective students a fast track to nursing as a career. Our accelerated B.S.N. students are highly successful both academically and professionally, in fact more than 90% pass the national licensing exam on their first attempt,” said University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies Dean and Professor Nilda (Nena) P. Peragallo Montano, DrPH, RN, FAAN.
Established in May 2004, the accelerated B.S.N. program was developed to offer the highest quality in nursing education with clinical training and hands-on patient care, in addition to addressing our nation's critical nursing shortage. Applicants to the accelerated program must already hold a baccalaureate degree; however, many also hold graduate degrees and/or have many years of professional experience in health-related or other relevant professions. Admission to this rigorous program requires applicants to have completed eight specific prerequisite courses (including science, math, and psychology courses) and to have obtained a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their previous degrees.
The Helene Fuld Health Trust is the nation's largest private funder devoted exclusively to nursing students and nursing education. In 1935, Dr Leonhard Felix Fuld and his sister, Florentine, created a foundation in honor of their mother, Helene. In 1965, the foundation was converted to the Helene Fuld Health Trust to support and promote the health, welfare and education of student nurses.
