May 07, 2013 — The Center of Excellence for Health Disparities Research: El Centro at the School of Nursing and Health Studies, University of Miami, participated in the City of South Miami Parks and Recreation Department’s “1st Annual - Live Well and Play Day” health fair which was held on March 23, 2013 from 10am-2pm at the Gibson-Bethel Community Center. There were many other community partners like the Miami Marlins and the American Heart Association. The City of South Miami Parks and Recreation Department strongly believes that health, fitness and overall wellness are essential to a strong society by educating our community and especially our youth to form healthy and wellness habits for the future. El Centro was at hand disseminating NIDA’s, “Family Checkup: Positive Parenting Prevents Drug Abuse” information, in addition to information on the CIFFTA Project, (Culturally Informed & Flexible Family-Based Treatment for Adolescents), which is led by Dr. Daniel Santisteban. The CIFFTA project offers family and individual counseling for Hispanic adolescents, between the ages of 14-17, that are dealing with substance abuse problems.
