El Centro implemented a program to expand mental health capacity in Cap Haitien, Haiti. This study was conducted in collaboration with Hospital Universitaire Justinien and the Northern Health Department of Haiti, which serves a population of one million people. The program trained 125 local health providers to identify, triage and provide supportive services for mental health disorders. In addition, 25 trainees learned how to be trainers of other health providers as a means of sustaining increased capacity. Dr. Guerda Nicolas, a Haitian-American psychologist, developed the empirically-based training program.
