The University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies renowned Nurse Anesthesia Program now offers the Doctor of Nursing Practice as the entry level to practice degree. The Doctor in Nursing Practice (DNP) is a terminal practice degree for the nursing discipline, and it will be required by 2025 by the Council of Accreditation. A focus of the degree is to translate research into practice, implementing evidenced based research findings.

The program continues to feature advanced clinical and simulated education in peri-operative patient care, critical care medicine, and pain management.  Our focus is to train expert clinicians, who are prepared to become leaders and advocate for changes in health care systems.

    Program Description

    The BSN-DNP Nurse Anesthesia Track is a 36 month (9 semesters) full time program beginning in January of each year.  The degree is offered to post baccalaureate nurses as an entry degree.  Graduates of the program receive the degree of Doctor of Nursing Practice.  Didactic, clinical, and simulated learning are integrated throughout the entire learning process.  The dynamic learning process prepares graduates to function effectively and safely incorporating a full range of specialty procedures, anesthesia techniques, and technology.  Students admitted to the program come from diverse backgrounds and are experienced nurses, having at least two years of critical care experience, and are highly qualified academically and professionally. 

    Our program is housed within the M. Christine Schwartz Center for Nursing Excellence located on the main campus of the University of Miami, in Coral Gables Florida.  The University of Miami is located at the crossroads of the Caribbean and the America’s in tropical Miami-Dade County, Florida.  This location provides a unique multicultural environment to study, practice, and live. 

    In the BSN-DNP, we offer traditional learning with small class sizes and a low faculty to student ratio. Our faculty members mentor students and guide them through the transition of doctoral education.  We do not currently offer online courses.

    The BSN-DNP is an advanced nursing program focuses on developing clinical excellence in practice, translational research (application of evidenced based research findings into clinical practice), evaluation of scientific research, leadership, organizational systems and health care management, health care policy, preventative strategies, informational systems and technology, and Interprofessional collaboration for improving health and health care delivery.
