All classes are held in the instructional kitchen located within the Wellness Enrichment Suite on the second floor of the Herbert Wellness Center.

Single Classes

All classes include learning how to prepare healthy menu items, as well as sampling creations. The classes will introduce recipe stations, ingredients, and equipment and will allow participants to explore new recipes with the help and guidance of the chef. Come enjoy this culinary experience and share your techniques and cooking experience with friends.

Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate Wednesday, September 28 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

It’s rich, it’s creamy, it’s everyone’s favorite and now it’s definitely good for you. Health studies are piling up confirming the great benefits of eating chocolate. In this “sweet” class you’ll learn how to incorporate really good chocolate in a variety of dishes, not just for dessert.

Menu: Chile Ancho Sopa de Chocolate (a delectable smooth chili with chocolate), Chicken in Chocolate Barbecue Sauce, Baby Carrots with Chocolate Balsamic Syrup, Roasted Cauliflower with Picada Sauce (a Catalan sauce made with almonds, parsley and chocolate)

30 Minutes or Less Monday, October 24 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Sure you can order in or pick up take out in 30 minutes, but how about a fresh, healthy meal prepared in the same time—and you know what’s in your food! In this very practical class, Robyn will show you chef coveted secrets to streamline your cooking so dinner is on the table fast. You’ll learn what to always have on hand, what you can do without, and quick main dishes that just need pairing with a salad or vegetables.

2-Part Cooking Series

Throughout each two-part series, participants learn time-saving techniques and basic cooking skills designed to quickly make simple and easy meals. In addition to learning new skills, Robyn ensures that no one walks away hungry from her classes – each session includes a full meal!

The Best of International Cuisine: Tuscan and Thai Saturday, September 17 & 24 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

In this series you will get a taste from two of cuisine’s most famous, Tuscan and Thai. Under the Tuscan Sun you’ll dream of green rolling hills and low hanging lemon trees, as we cook authentic, healthy dishes from Robyn’s annual trips to Tuscany. The food is super simple and you will be able to bring a little Italy in your home with these easy but delicious dishes. Next on the experience is a Taste of Thai where Chef Robyn will teach how to capture the complex taste of Thai food with easy home kitchen ingredients. These healthy dishes will wow your taste buds!

The Best of International Cuisine: Paris and Tapas Wed., Oct. 19 & Tues., Oct. 25 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

In this series learn about some of Chef Robyn’s favorite journeys! Robyn’s long-time annual visits to the City of Light has taught her a thing or two about the flavors of France. Join her for an Evening in Paris and learn about one of the worlds healthiest cultures. Then take a train to Spain and explore the famous healthy little plates, Tapas, perfect for everyday eating with the gang!

The Best Thanksgiving Wednesday, November 9 & 16 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Join us for this Holiday themed series in which you will learn healthy and delicious sides and appetizers. In the Sides class you’ll learn new healthy and delicious dishes to accompany the mash potatoes and stuffing and give your dinner an interesting twist! Then give your guests no-guilt treats to whet their appetite before the main event. Share these healthy appetizers at Holiday time with the ones you love!

Sides Menu: Sweet Potato Spoonbread, Caramelized Brussels Sprouts with Pancetta, Maple Roasted Sweet Carrots and Parsnips, Green Beans with Ginger
Appetizer Menu: Balsamic Prosciutto Wrapped Shrimp, Baked Feta with Marinara, Grape and Pork Kebabs, Corn Fritters, (spiced nuts to take home)

Private Cooking Classes

Interested in holding a private cooking class for a group of friends or special event? Student organizations, University of Miami departments, and non-UM affiliated community members are welcome to schedule a private cooking class for their group. Groups work directly with a chef to select their menu. Price varies based on the number of participants, duration of the class, food costs, and UM affiliation status.

Notes: The Instructional Kitchen is closed during the summer months (June-August).  Kitchen space is not available for use by outside chefs.

How To Register for a Class

You can register in-person by visiting the Herbert Wellness Center sales office located in the Wellness Enrichment Suite, over the telephone by calling 305-284-5433, or online. The Sales Office accepts cash, checks, and credit cards (Visa, MC, AMEX).

Cancellation Policies

The Herbert Wellness Center reserves the right to cancel a cooking class one day prior if the minimum number of registrants is not satisfied. In circumstances where the Herbert Wellness Center is unable to provide a scheduled class, all monies paid will be returned or participants have the option of selecting an alternative course.

Participants must cancel their registration at least 24 business hours prior to the class in order to receive a full refund. Participants who fail to cancel within this time period will not receive a refund. Transferring registration to a future class must also be done at least 24 business hours prior to the class in order to receive a full refund. If a participant is unable to attend a class, their registration is transferable to another person; however, the original participant must notify the Wellness Suite of the transference prior to the class.

Children ages 13 and older are welcome to attend a cooking class. No prior cooking experience is necessary to participate.
