What you will learn..You can expect to learn the nutritional breakdown of your diet, as well as ways to incorporate nutrient-dense foods (i.e. foods that are high in essential vitamins and minerals, but low in fat, salt, and added sugars) that contribute to a healthful diet. By understanding the various components of your diet, you will be able to determine what changes you would like to make to your diet (i.e. whether to decrease fat intake or increase whole wheat and fruit and vegetable consumption) to safely achieve your wellness goals and maintain a balanced diet.
What you will not learn…nutrition consultation appointments are not designed to provide you with specific dietary goals regarding vitamin and mineral intake. For instance, the Wellness Suite staff will not recommend that you consume 400 mcg of folic acid per day, nor will they suggest supplements or herbal therapies. Over-consumption of certain vitamins and minerals can be detrimental to your health. Consult your doctor or a registered dietitian for this type of information.
Wellness Suite staff are not registered dietitians, and a nutrition consultation should not be considered an adequate substitution for those seeking in-depth nutritional information, especially if you suffer from a health condition or nutritional deficiency. A registered dietitian (RD) is licensed by the State to provide nutritional counseling for individuals with specific medical concerns such as diabetes or an eating disorder. The Wellness Suite in conjunction with the UM health center can provide you with a referral to a local dietitian for this service.
