Walking Counts is a poster campaign to get our UM family up and walking for better health.  We’ve taken our Walking Calculator on the road so you can find useful walking calculations all around campus without having to access our website.  Whenever you see a Walking Counts poster, you’ll be able to determine the steps, calories burned, and time it takes to various destinations on campus from that very place where you’re reading the poster!

Posters are located all over campus.  Look for them in sheltered Hurry ‘Cane shuttle stops, as well as all major buildings on campus.  Don’t see a poster where you think one ought to be?  Well, we want to hear about it! Let us know so we can get a poster up for the benefit of all.

What is the Walking Calculator?

The Walking Calculator is a database of approximate distances, steps taken, calories burned, and time it takes to get from place to place on campus for over 50 different popular locations.  Not only can you figure out how long it will take to get from point A to B to avoid being late for a meeting or class, but you’ll also know how many calories you’ll burn getting there.  The Walking Calculator is a great tool to use if you want to be sure you’re reaching your goal of taking 10,000 steps a day for good health!

To choose your starting point and destination, first select the appropriate building category from the drop box.  Next, select your location and press ‘submit’.  After that…get to stepping!

Note:  A global positioning system was used to ascertain all distances which were based on the most reasonable direct path.  Calculated minutes assume a 3.3 mile per hour, moderate walking pace. Calculated calories are a general estimate which may vary by weight. The estimates used for steps and calories are as follows: 1 mile = 2000 steps = 100 calories.

Why have a Walking Calculator?

The Wellness Center staff knows that, while knowledge is power, there’s nothing quite as powerful for your well-being as actually taking an active role in your own wellness.  So that’s what we did!  We strapped on our GPS system and charted over 1,300 distances all around campus, not only for our own wellness, but for our UM family as well.  Now you can use this calculator for both convenience and health!  Use the calculator to help reduce stress and worry by making sure you get to places on time, and by avoiding long, unnecessary waits at shuttle stops.  Plan exercising routes, or use the calculator to tally up your steps for the day as you aim for your goal of 10,000 steps a day for health.  Whatever you do, we hope the walking calculator makes walking an enjoyable and easy-to-do part of your daily routine that will also contribute to your well-being.

Why does “Walking Count”?

Walking is an unbelievably easy, fun, and free way to exercise.  After all, you can walk most places, you don’t need any equipment to walk, you can walk in your regular daily clothes without having to change, and you can walk with anyone you want!  We also want you to know that walking is an excellent form of physical activity that will improve your health.  In fact, your body can achieve the same physical benefits from walking as it does from running.

If done regularly, walking will:

  • reduce heart disease and cancer risk
  • lower total cholesterol
  • raise healthy HDL cholesterol
  • lower blood pressure
  • maintain healthy bones and muscles
  • stabilize blood sugar
  • improve immunity
  • relieve stress

The University of Miami is deeply committed to the well-being of its students and faculty and staff, as well as the local community.  As such, the Wellness Center strives to educate and assist all of our UM family in their efforts to live the wellness lifestyle, and the ‘Walking Counts’ campaign is no exception!
