Tom Soria, Assistant Director of Intramurals & Special Events and Director of Camps
Tom Soria received his bachelor’s degree in secondary education and his master’s degree in sports administration from Wichita State University. He enjoys officiating sports and loves the outdoors and is looking forward to his 10th year at Mini Canes camp.
He is CPR/AED certified and is also a Registered Collegiate Recreational Sports Professional (RCRSP). Tom is a proud father to his two boys.
Connie Nickel, Assistant Director of Recreational Sports and Camps
Connie Nickel, assistant director of recreational sports and camps. Connie earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan and her master’s degree at St. Thomas University. She enjoyed an outstanding 25-year career in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and is a member of the UM Sports Hall of Fame, Iron Arrow, and Tau Beta Sigma Fraternity. She is highly regarded by students, staff, and coaches. This is her fourth year with Mini Canes.
Ashley Falcon, Assistant Director of Wellness and Program Aides and Assistant Director of Camps
Ashley earned her bachelor’s of science degree in psychology from Duke University and her master’s of public health degree from the University of South Florida. She also holds a doctorate in epidemiology from UM.Her hobbies include chess, basketball, playing guitar, cooking, and reading. Ashley is a nutritional consultant and a certified First Aid and CPR/AED instructor. She coordinates the Program Aide volunteer program and camp wellness lessons. This is Ashley’s 10th year with camp.
Mark “Bird” Dusek, Director of Operations for Sports Programs
Mark Dusek is a sales representative with Matty’s Sports and previously served as the athletic director at R.A.S.G. Hebrew Academy. He has been involved in recreation programs and summer camps for over 30 years and has coached and participated in all levels of athletic competition. Mark is a Florida certified teacher and is also certified in CPR and First Aid. He is a 1978 graduate of UM and is commonly referred to as “The Bird.” He is the father of three children and is in his 20th year with Mini Canes.
Angie Montero, Director of Operations for Administration
Angie Ramos was born and raised in Miami and after graduating from the University of Miami in 2011, she began teaching third grade at Miami Children’s Museum Charter School. She was named Teacher of the Year at her school in 2013. Angie enjoys dancing, cheering on her CANES at football games, and taking trips to Disney World as often as possible. This is her third year with Mini Canes.
Pat Greene, Arts and Crafts Instructor
Pat Greene has been teaching for over 40 years and holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education. She is HRS certified in childcare training and is an art teacher at Holy Rosary Catholic School. Before joining Mini Canes Camp, Pat was active in The Boys and Girls Club of Miami as a program director for their summer camp and organized its softball and intramural basketball programs. She is married with three sons and three grandsons. This is her 20th year with camp.
Marena Gavilan, Administrative Assistant and Camp Registration Assistant
Marena Gavilan joined the Department of Wellness and Recreation in August 2007. She works directly with Connie and Tom Soria assisting with club sports, intramurals/special events, and camp. Marena has two sons and a daughter. She enjoys traveling, reading, music, and exercising. Marena is responsible for all camper registration and is very excited for her eighth summer of camp.
Camp Support Staff
Nicole is an Athletic Trainer at West Broward High School in Pembroke Pines. She majored in Sports Medicine at both the University of Florida and Florida International University. Nicole is a Miami native who enjoys working out, painting/drawing and has worked with Mini Canes camp in past summers. During her free time, Nicole likes to create different types of art & spend time with her friends and family.
