Tom Soria, Assistant Director of Intramurals & Special Events and Director of Camps
Tom received his masters and bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University. He was previously at Texas A&M Corpus Christi as the Coordinator, and then Assistant Director of Recreational Sports for 4 1/2 years. While there, he was responsible for Outdoor Adventures, Intramurals, Club Sports, Marketing/Web, and Student Personnel. He has been The Assistant Director of Intramurals, Special Events, and Camp at The Herbert Wellness Center since June of 2006. He is a member of The National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) and is a Registered Collegiate Recreational Sports Professional (RCRSP.) Tom has officiated college baseball, high school football, and basketball in various states such as Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, and Florida.

Connie Nickel, Assistant Director of Recreational Sports and Camps
Connie is the newest member of the Herbert Wellness Center professional staff. Connie earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Michigan and her master's degree at St. Thomas University. She enjoyed an outstanding 25-year career in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and is a member of the UM Sports Hall of Fame, Iron Arrow, and Tau Beta Sigma Fraternity. She is highly regarded by students, staff, and coaches. This is her 3rd year working with Mini Canes camp.


Ashley Falcon, Assistant Director of Wellness and Program Aides and Assistant Director of Camps
Ashley joined the DWR staff in September 2005. She earned her bachelor of science in psychology from Duke University, and a master’s degree in public health from the University of South Florida. Ashley is also a UM alumna with a Ph.D. in epidemiology. She is a certified Basic Life Support instructor, and trains all camp staff in CPR and AED use. Her hobbies include playing chess, basketball, cooking, and reading.


Mark “Bird” Dusek, Director of Operations for Sports Programs
Mark is presently the athletic director and physical education teacher at R.A.S.G. Hebrew Academy in Miami Beach. He has been involved in recreation and summer camps for the past 23 years. He has coached and participated in all levels of athletic competition. He is a state of Florida Certified Teacher and has been as basketball official for 27 years. Mark is also certified in CPR/First Aid. He is a father of three children. This is his eighth year with the camp. He is a 1978 graduate of UM and commonly referred to as “The Bird.”


Angie Ramos, Director of Operations for Administration
Angie Ramos was born and raised in Miami, FL. After graduating from the University of Miami in 2011, she began teaching 3rd grade at the Miami Children’s Museum Charter School. In 2013, she was named Teacher of the Year at her school. She enjoys dancing, cheering on her CANES at football games and taking trips to Disney World as often as possible. This is her second year with the Mini Canes.



Pat Greene, Arts and Crafts Instructor
Mrs. Greene has been a teacher for more than 36 years. She was active in Boys and Girls Club of Miami as a program director for their summer camp. Her sports involvement has been organizing and scheduling softball and intramural basketball in the Boys and Girls club. Pat holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s degree in education and is currently employed by Holy Rosary Catholic School as an Aide to the Kindergarten classes. She is HRS certified in childcare Training and is married with three grown sons and two grandsons.

Marena Gavilan, Administrative Assistant and Camp Registration Assistant
Marena assists with Club Sports, Intramurals, Special Events and, most importantly, the Mini Canes Recreational Sports Camp. She coordinates camp registration, and assists with camp inquiries.
