Before you arrive to campus this fall, there are several things that you need to do. The best resource you have is available to you by logging into your myUM account. However, much of that information is detailed for you below.
Cane Card ID
Your Cane Card serves as your student identification cards during your time at UM. The Cane Card gives you access to buildings such as your residence hall, the Otto G. Richter Library, computer laboratories, the swimming pool, and the Patty and Allan Herbert Wellness Center. Your Cane Card also allows you to check out books from the library, gain access to athletic events, purchase discounted Metrorail tickets, and eat in the cafeterias (if you have a meal plan). New students are asked to submit a photo on-line before they arrive to campus and will pick up their Cane Card when they check-in for orientation.
Course Preferences
The Course Preferences Process is an online process through which you can review the course options available to you during your first semester and then let us know which courses you would prefer to take. The choices are left to you, so don't wait too long to let us know what you're interested in taking this fall! To start the process, 1) log into myUM, 2) select the Student tab and then click on " Academic" , and 3) select New Student Course Preferences. Please note this is course preference selection process, not a course registration process. The registrar's office will process your course preference selections and determine your fall classes based on your selections. You will receive your final fall schedule during Orientation this August.
Alcohol Edu
The University of Miami has joined together with many top schools in the country in adopting
AlcoholEdu for College as a component of our alcohol prevention initiative. It is a thoughtful, educated, and educating program for adults committed to thinking about their life choices. We require every new incoming University of Miami student to take AlcoholEdu for College. You will receive log in instructions and may access the course beginning in late July. It is a two-part program; you will need to complete Part 1 (approximately 3 hours) before arriving to campus and approximately 45 days later, you will receive an automated email asking you to complete Part 2 which takes approximately 15 minutes.
Housing Contract/Move-In Information
New students who have been admitted to the University are eligible to apply for housing on-line via myUM. To activate access, specifically to the housing application area, admitted students will need to pay the enrollment deposit to verify their admission acceptance. In the housing application area located under the 'Life at UM' tab, new students view a sample housing agreement, preview an application tutorial, and see the housing rates for the coming year and apply for housing. New freshman not living with their parents will be required to live on campus, as long as space is available. Information about the Fall Semester
Move-In Schedule is also available. For more specific questions about applying for housing or the move-in process, new students should contact the Assignments Staff in the Department of Residence Halls office at (305) 284-4505 or visit
www.miami.edu/housing.
Student Health Information
The
Student Health Center provides primary care, specialty care and pharmacy services to eligible University of Miami students. You are not required to have the Health Center sponsored insurance plan to utilize their services. Most services are available on a " drop-in" basis and many are provided free of charge. Appointments are available for specialty care and other services, if preferred. Before arriving to campus, there are several important steps you need to take related to
immunization compliance form and
health insurance.
