NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION SCHEDULE 2012 Preliminary schedule of events, posted 4/2/12
Wednesday, August 15, 2012
8:00am - 1:00pm	Residential College Move-In for first-year students with last names A-F, all engineering and music students
9:00am - 4:00pm	New Student and Parent Orientation Check-in University Center, International Lounge, 2nd Floor Orientation check-in is held over two days (8/15 and 8/16). All new first-year and transfer students must check-in for the orientation program. You will be given your orientation materials, group assignment and meeting location. Parents that are participating in the Parent Orientation may also check-in at this time. First-year commuter students are encouraged to check-in on Thursday, August 16th. Please note that varsity athletes, as well as international and exchange students, will be checked in for the new student orientation program during their pre-orientation program and do not need to check-in during this time.
9:30am - 4:00pm	International Student Orientation Contact the Department of International Student and Scholar Services at www.miami.edu/isss for additional information.
10:00am – 6:00pm	Horizons Program Contact the Department of Multicultural Student Affairs at www.miami.edu/msa for additional information.
1:00pm – 6:00pm	Residential College Move-In for first-year students with last names G-O, all engineering and music students
1:30pm – 5:00pm	Transfer Student Orientation Sessions Meet the student leaders that will be your guide during these first days, and other new students in your community. Information about campus services and programs most relevant to transfer students will be provided. Transfer students will also have their Academic Dean’s Meetings on Thursday, August 16 (see entry below). We also encourage transfer students to attend the President’s Picnic (Sunday) and Canefest (Tuesday).

ALL DAY	Academic Dean’s Meetings for Transfer Students This presentation by the Dean and other representatives from your school or college covers information about academic advising, course scheduling and services. Times and locations vary.
9:00am - 4:00pm	First-Year Students and Parent Orientation Check-in University Center, International Lounge, 2nd Floor
9:30am - 2:00pm	Mandatory Session for International Education and Exchange Program (IEEP) Students IEEP or exchange students are students who come to Miami under the exchange agreement between UM and their institutions.
6:30pm - 7:00pm	First Meeting with Orientation Groups for First-Year Students Meet the student leaders that will be your guide during these first days, and other new students in your community. You will have a chance to review the schedule and get ready for your first days as a ‘Cane!
7:30pm - 8:30pm	‘Cane Kick-Off BankUnited Center President Shalala officially welcomes you to the University of Miami! Students and parents are invited to learn what it means to be a ‘Cane: vibrant spirit & tradition, achievement in academics, interaction with outstanding faculty, excellence in research, and involvement outside the classroom. This high energy event will also feature the UM cheerleaders, the Band of the Hour, and Sebastian the Ibis. Food concession stands will be open.

10:00am – 11:00am	New Student Convocation with Dr. Elias Aboujaoude BankUnited Center New Student Convocation serves as the first academic event for new students. It annually features a prominent national/international leader who has made significant educational contributions towards addressing and improving societal and world issues. (Doors open at 8:45am. First-year students will enter with their orientation groups, transfer and exchange students meet at the Fieldhouse Multipurpose Room. Parents will be seated separately)
11:15am – 12:00pm	Enhancing Your Undergraduate Education BankUnited Center Dr. William Scott Green, Senior Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education and Dr. Patricia A. Whitely, Vice President of Student Affairs, welcome new students.
12:15pm – 5:00pm	First-Year Student Orientation Sessions Living and Learning in Your Community Health, Wellness and Safety Student Rights and Responsibilities

9:30am – 4:00pm	First-Year Student Assessment New first-year students will be pre-assigned to participate in a mandatory assessment session. Your Orientation Fellow will escort you to the appropriate location.
