Registration

All incoming first-year students from Miami-Dade and Broward counties who have sent in a deposit for the fall semester should receive a Great Start postcard in the mail in late Spring. Registration for Great Start can be completed by online credit card payment only. For more detailed information on registering for Great Start 2012, please click on the “Registration Information” link on the right-hand side of the page.

There will be three weekend Great Start sessions: Session 1: June 23-24, Session 2: July 14-15, and Session 3: July 28-29. To sign up for your preferred weekend, please sign up as early as possible, as space is limited.

Great Start is a popular program and space is limited. Registration is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost of the two day program is $85.00 and must be paid upon registration. The registration fee includes housing in the residence hall, all meals during the program, a t-shirt, and other giveaways. The registration deadlines are as follows:

Monday, June 18 at 5:00pm for the June 23-24 (Session I)
Monday, July 9 at 5:00pm for the July 14-15 (Session II)
Monday, July 23 at 5:00pm for the July 28-29 (Session III)

Once you have registered, you will receive an email confirmation and instructions about where to meet for the start of the program and any program updates. If you do not receive an email confirmation, please contact our office via email at greatstart@miami.edu or by phone at (305) 284-5646 to make sure that we have received your registration form and payment. More detailed information about the program, instructions about where to meet to check in for the program, and any program updates will be sent after the deadline to register for each session.

Highlights

The two-day program will be filled with activities and events that will emphasize college adjustment and campus involvement opportunities. During this time, all participants will be required to stay on campus and will spend the night in the designated residence hall. Roommates will be same-sex and randomly selected and will be determined prior to arrival. In addition to staying in the residence halls, participants will have the chance to:

  • Discuss student life at UM with the student staff
  • Meet other incoming commuter students
  • Learn what to expect from your college experience
  • Eat and sleep in on campus facilities
  • Go on tours of the University's campus and facilities
  • Attend a BBQ and party at the Rathskeller
  • Participate in many fun and entertaining activities


What to Bring:

Comfortable clothing (shorts, t-shirts, socks)
Sneakers (no flip flops during the day)

Clothes for evening entertainment at the Rathskeller
