Accept the change and move on, because your opportunities here are vast, and you might as well make the best of that. All of that applies to meeting people too; keep an open mind, and don’t try to label yourself. We have the most diverse campus in the USA, and it’s definitely worth taking advantage of. RA location building/floor: Stanford Walsh 12

Hometown/where from: Dallas, TX/San Antonio, TX

Favorite food: Chicken fajita tacos

Favorite movie: Forrest Gump

Hobbies: Sand volleyball, volunteering, playing candy crush, listening to country music

Advice to residents: Don’t be afraid to be yourself and meet new people. I came to Miami not knowing a single person and ended up meeting what seemed like the entire freshman class. Part of that was attributed to always keeping my door open, inviting people to sit with me at lunch in the dining hall and getting involved on campus. Whether it’s an academically-based club, a volunteer organization or an intramural sports team introduce yourself and don’t be shy! Also, go to class! It’s really easy to slack off and not go to class but it’s important to be engaged during lectures and ask questions. Teachers don’t always put PowerPoints online so it’s essential to go, even if attendance isn’t taken. Lastly, go to your professor’s office hours and meet them. Getting on a first-name basis with them is one thing I didn’t think mattered but ended up finding out to be extremely helpful down the road.
