Currently there are two optional pre-orientation programs for new students.
The Department of Commuter Student Involvement (CSI) sponsors Great Start is designed for new first-year students from Miami-Dade and Broward counties that will be commuting from home. Great Start
is an entirely student run overnight pre-orientation program designed to promote and emphasize college adjustment and campus involvement opportunities. The program's goal is to help you feel like a part of the University and give you a chance to meet other commuter students.
Each year the Department of Multicultural Student Affairs sponsors Horizons for incoming African, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American students. Horizons
is a pre-orientation program designed to assist new multicultural students in their transition to the University of Miami. This program compliments the University's new student orientation program by presenting students with a preview of campus life.
International Student Orientation
(ISO) is a pre-orientation program sponsored by the Department of International Student and Scholar Services for new University of Miami international freshmen and transfer students. ISO compliments the University's new student orientation program by providing new international students with information that will assist in their transition to living and studying in the U.S. Participants are provided with the opportunity to meet returning students and administrators who will discuss immigration rules international students must follow to stay in the U.S., academic expectations in the U.S., local community resources, life and customs in the U.S., and available health care, emergency assistance, and insurance coverage. New international students will also have an opportunity to meet and get acquainted with new peers. ISO is held at the University of Miami Coral Gables campus in August and January.
