Leadership Opportunities
The Department of Orientation and Commuter Student Involvement has several leadership positions available for current students. We seek undergraduate students to serve as Orientation Fellows (OFs), Orientation Leaders (OLs), and Program Coordinators (PCs) as described below. ‘Cane Kickoff is an orientation program built upon the dedication, passion and enthusiasm of our current students. It is designed to prepare newly admitted undergraduate first-year, transfer students, and family members for their first semester at the University of Miami by guiding them through the transition process.

Orientation Fellows (OFs)
Orientation Fellows are the face of orientation and play an important role in creating a positive first impression of UM for incoming students. Orientation Fellows will lead a group of first-year students through ‘Cane Kickoff in collaboration with Resident Advisors, Commuter Assistants, Transfer Assistants, and First-Year Fellows. Through this volunteer opportunity, you will gain valuable leadership experience and further connect with your peers, faculty, and administration.

Applications for Orientation Fellows for ’Cane Kickoff: Fall 2016 will be available beginning Monday, February 1, 2016 and are due by Monday, February 15, 2016. Applicants will participate in an interview process and selections will be announced on or before Spring Break. All undergraduate students are eligible to apply. Orientation Fellows will be expected to participate in a training program in the spring semester and return to campus by Saturday, August 13th to participate in a training program as well as ’Cane Kickoff. Please contact us at with questions. 

Orientation Leaders (OLs)
Students that have previously served as Orientation Fellows are eligible to apply to serve as Orientation Leaders. In this position, you will serve on the orientation planning committee and play a role in the development of the orientation program and the selection/training of Orientation Fellows. Orientation Leaders will lead a group of Orientation Fellows during the orientation program, as well as manage the logistics of the New Student and Parent Orientation program and the Family Weekend program. Applications are made available during the middle of the fall semester.

Program Coordinators (PCs)
The Program Coordinators are the student leaders that manage the New Student and Parent Orientation program, as well as the Family Weekend program, with the Director and Assistant Director of the Department of Orientation. Program Coordinators have previously served as Orientation Leaders and are responsible for the recruitment, selection, training and assignments of orientation student volunteers. Program Coordinators are expected to be available throughout the summer leading up to the orientation program. Summer housing is provided, as is a stipend for working in the office. Applications are available in the early fall semester.
