Academic Fellows (AFs) are undergraduate student staff members who live in the residential colleges. AFs serve as an academic transitional support system for first-year students as they face new challenges and concerns during their first year of college. Over the course of an academic year, AFs work an average of 10-12 hours per week. These hours include programs, designing & creating bulletin boards, and office hours. Learn more about each of Hecht's AFs below.

Hi everyone! My name is Jonny Diaz, and I’m a second-year AF in Hecht. I’m a junior majoring in Business Law on the Pre-Law track with minors in Music and Modern Languages. As a native South Floridian, I want to welcome all of you to your new home! When I’m not in class or “AF-ing”, I stay busy on campus as a member of the Cinematic Arts Commission and the President’s 100, by competing in Homecoming, and working as a Desk Assistant in Hecht. I’m also a Research Assistant in the Department of Business Law, working with Dr. Patricia Abril. In my free time, I love watching movies and TV, singing loudly, and of course, going to Hurricane football games. I’m looking forward to another great year in Hecht with all of you. OH YEAH HECHT YEAH!

Hey y'all! My name is Sri Pulusani and I'm from Memphis, Tennessee! Currently I'm a sophomore at UM and will be serving as a first year AF in Hecht. I am a Microbiology major and Chemistry minor on the pre-med track. You can usually find me around campus giving tours as a P100, practicing with one of Miami's competitive Indian dance teams, or just hanging out with friends. Just for fun, I love learning how to cook, shopping, and working out. I'm really laid-back and love meeting new people, so don't be afraid to introduce yourself! Welcome to the U.

Hi everyone! I’m Ghansham Christopher Ramkhellawan, but you can me Chris, Ram, or if you are feeling creative- be my guest. I am senior Biology major here at UM. This will be my first year as an Academic Fellow and also my first year living on campus. I am from Georgetown, Guyana, but I’ve lived in Miami for the past ten years, after living in New York City for a year. When I’m not studying or exploring Miami, I’m probably in my lab at Bascom Palmer where I conduct research on Age-Related Macular Degeneration. I’m also involved on campus as a Ronald A. Hammond scholar, HHMI scholar, and member of the Association of Commuter Students. I look forward for a dynamic and rewarding year in Hecht, and getting to know you all!

Hi there! My name is Kayla Costello, and I am from Palm Bay, Florida. This will be my first year as an Academic Fellow in Hecht. I am currently in my sophomore year at UM, where I am double majoring in Geography and Secondary Education. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling to exotic lands, running rather slowly, reading books about controversial politics and religion, meeting new people, and going to any of Florida's beautiful tourist-filled beaches. I can't wait to meet all of my residents this year, so please stop by if you are ever in need of assistance or a chat!

Hey everyone!! My name is Michael Richardson and I am beyond stoked to be returning to Hecht as an AF for my third year in a row. I am a Fourth Year Architecture student with a Minor in Music (Vocal performance/theatre). I hail from a very small suburb in New Jersey called Randolph but I have adjusted pretty quickly to the hustle and bustle of Miami. If I'm not in class you will probably find me behind Hecht Front Desk because I work as a Desk Assistant in the residential college too! But when I'm not in the building you will most likely run across me in the Frost choirs, at the tennis courts, in line at Jamba, or in the mall. I am a Hammond Scholar as well as a member of UM Ambassadors and the President's 100. I am super excited to get to know everyone so feel free to stop me and say hi!

Hi everyone! My name is Stanley Hartman, and I am excited to say that this is going to be my first year as an AF in Hecht. I came to UM from a small city on the east coast of Florida called Jensen Beach. I am currently a sophomore double majoring in Physics and Math, and I couldn't be happier with my two majors! A large portion of my free time is taken up by UM's marching band and basketball pep band where I play the trumpet, but when I'm not there or studying, I enjoy playing just about any sport, going to the gym to work out, or just relaxing with friends. I'm really looking forward to the 2011 - 2012 school year, and I can't wait to meet and get to know each and every one of you!

Welcome to Miami, fellow Canes! My name is Hong-Uyen Hua and I will be a second-year AF in Hecht for the 2011-2012 school year. I'm an incoming junior majoring in biochemistry, with minors in Classics, Modern Languages, and Chemistry. Coming from Plantation, FL, I've already garnered so many great experiences here at UM, and I hope to share them with everyone. On campus, I like to be active and involved. Currently, I am the Vice-President of COISO, which is very close to my heart. I have also worked with AASA as an e-board member and Student Government as the COISO Senator and Academic Affairs chair. If I'm not busy studying, I love to play soccer, go to the beach, and play piano. I am also excited to be taking up research this year at the Bascom Palmers Eye Institute. I absolutely cannot wait to meet everyone and look forward to a great year! Go Canes!

Aloha! I am Jasmine Holmes, a proud second-generation Miami Hurricane from Tallahassee, FL, and I am delighted to be serving as an Academic Fellow in Hecht for the 2011-2012 academic year. I am a sophomore Ronald A. Hammond Scholar in the School of Business Administration, majoring in accounting and minoring in Africana studies. Those two fields are enough evidence to show that my academic interests are varied to say the least, but my involvement outside of the classroom is quite diversified as well. On campus, I am involved with United Black Students (UBS), Black Female Development Circle (BFDC), National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), and National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS). In my spare time, I love to paint, dance, go to the beach, go to my new church, hang out with friends, and eat ice cream. Feel free to stop by anytime because I can’t wait to meet U!

Glad tidings to all! My name is Christine Chesley and I am currently a sophomore here at the U. I represent the fine state of Virginia and, specifically, the quaint city of Chesapeake. I am passionate about both geology and marine science, so I figured, “hey, why not double major in them?” I also plan to minor in mathematics, and maybe even physics if gravity doesn’t keep me down. When I’m not studying or hanging out with my friends, you might find me drilling holes in corals, busting an Exhibela in SalsaCraze, or doing random acts of environmentalism. Please don’t hesitate to stop by my office, located in Pentland 1213, if you need academic assistance, are craving free candy, or just want someone to talk to. Here’s to a great school year!
