Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) is an internationally recognized program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The comprehensive, women-only course begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. All courses at the University are taught by nationally certified R.A.D. instructors. Each student is provided a workbook/ reference manual which outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth. In addition, an instructor-signed student manual is the key to the free lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D. graduates. The only self-defense program endorsed by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA), R.A.D. is one of the most recognized women’s self-defense programs available.
The basic R.A.D. program encompasses 9-12 hours of self-defense instruction with its foundations in education and awareness. The 12 hour course version has a final simulation exercise whereas the 9 hour course version does not. Each course includes lecture, discussion and training in practical physical defense techniques, suitable for women of all ages and abilities. Generally, the program is divided into four, 3-hour sessions or three, 4-hour sessions. The course fee is $35 for students/ faculty/ staff and $45 for non-University affiliated individuals (public). These fees are used to subsidize the budget which pays for instructor overtime and the materials distributed to all students.
The 20-hour advanced R.A.D. program is for participants who have already completed the Basic R.A.D. Program. It builds on techniques and strategies from the Basic class, with such topics as defenses against edged weapons, firearms defense, prone defense strategies, ground fighting, multiple subject encounters and more. This course has no lecture; it is all advanced self-defense technique instruction. Per student course fees vary.
The University of Miami Police and Security Departments offer both Basic and Advanced RAD classes periodically throughout the year on the Coral Gables and Medical Campuses. Participants MUST register and pay for courses through the R.A.D. Course Registration & Payment Form. All classes are taught by R.A.D. Certified Instructors.
