Chief Rivero has been with the University of Miami since October of 2006. In that time he has spearheaded countless innovative initiatives in community policing and campus law enforcement that earned him the title of 2007 Director of the Year by Campus Safety Magazine. Previously, Rivero served the City of Miami Police Department for 26 years, retiring as a Major. With the City of Miami Police Department, Rivero served in many roles including the chief spokesperson in media relations, commander of Coral Way and Little Havana districts, director of the Miami Police Training Center, anti-corruption unit in Internal Affairs, and was ultimately promoted to major in charge of the Central District, with over 195 officers and a budget of $20 million. During his tenure, he received several honors and awards including the Distinguished Service Medal and Silver Star from the Fraternal Order of Police.
Under the direction of the Chief, the University Of Miami Police Department is responsible for providing a safe and secure campus environment through collaborative, innovative, proactive and professional law enforcement initiatives that follow a community policing model of law enforcement.
