Janet Gavarrete

Title/Position: Associate Vice President, Campus Planning & Development

Profile:

Janet began working for the University of Miami in 2000 and was named Associate Vice President for Campus Planning and Development in 2006.  During her years at the University, Janet has been responsible for all master planning, land use and regulatory approvals for all University Campuses. Under her leadership, the University has embarked on a strategic preservation plan to designate important campus buildings as historic landmarks.  Janet has spearheaded the creation of a new campus master plan that addresses the University’s long term goals and how new facilities will assist with the fulfillment of the strategic plan for the institution. Janet has also assisted with many regulatory approvals for the Miller School of Medicine Campus and has been successful in increasing development thresholds for the Health District and maintaining all previous entitlements in a new City of Miami zoning code.  At the Rosenstiel Campus, Janet has worked on obtaining regulatory approvals for future development.

Prior to joining the University in June of 2000, she worked at City of Miami Beach were, as Assistant City Manager, she oversaw the departments of Planning, Building, Parks and Recreation and Children’s Affairs.  Additionally, Janet was responsible for a number of special projects that included the City’s Capital Improvement Program and the implementation of a $92 million General Obligation Bond Program.  She has experience in negotiations of settlements related to land use/zoning issues and property rights.  She has also worked at Miami-Dade Community College, Univision, and the City of Miami in various capacities.

Mrs. Gavarrete is a Registered Landscape Architect and planner with extensive experience in land use, urban design, planning and development.
