What is a Cane Card?
The Cane Card is the official on-campus identification card of the University of Miami. All university students, faculty, staff as well as other members of our community, are required to carry their Cane Card for identification purposes while on campus.
The Cane Card can also be used for the following:
• Gain access to buildings, designated by card type and approved access. This includes residence halls, the Otto G. Richter Library, computer laboratories, the swimming pool in the Whitten University Center, and the Student Wellness Center (for those who purchase a membership). • Check out books from the library.
• Access to athletic events (fee required).
• Purchase discounted Metrorail tickets (students only).

Who should have a Cane Card?
All faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other designated individuals who have access to the University will be issued a Cane Card. Authorized department liaisons are responsible for making arrangements for contractors, vendors or other non-University personnel who are approved to be on University premises.
How do I get a Cane Card?
New students: More detailed information will be e-mailed to all new students about dedicated orientation sessions when the Cane Card can be collected.
At all other times, Cane Cards will be issued in person at the Cane Card office, currently located in the McKnight Building, 1st floor, 5807 Ponce De Leon Blvd. Please provide a valid photo I.D. and be prepared to have a photo taken. There is no charge for your first card. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 8:30am -5:00pm.
Faculty and Staff: Cane Cards will be issued in person at the Cane Card office, currently located at the Parking & Transportation office located in the McKnight Building, Suite 100, 5807 Ponce De Leon Blvd. Please provide a valid photo I.D. and be prepared to have your photo taken. There is no charge for your first card. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 8:30am -5:00pm.
Prior to issuance of Cane Card, all valid approvals must be submitted by the authorized personnel. Cane Card ID office staff may not issue a Cane Card without appropriate consent from authorized departments, Faculty Affairs for Faculty and HR for Staff.
Dependents: In order to receive a Cane Card, you must first have a University of Miami ID number (C number). Click Here and complete the registration process. The employee of the dependent will need to forward to HR Benefits a copy of the supporting paperwork such as a birth certificate or marriage certificate (Please call HR Benefits at 305-284-3004 for details). HR Benefits will authorize the dependent to be added to the Cane Card system. Additionally, the following Cane Card form must be completed and signed by authorized personnel in order to be granted a Cane Card. There is a fee for the Cane Card for non-UM personnel.
Vendor, and Affiliates: In order to receive a Cane Card, you must first have a University of Miami ID number (C number). Click Here and complete the registration process. The department liaison or sponsor must then email First Name, Last Name, Sponsor Name, Sponsor Department, Affiliate Type, Expiration Date (max 1 year) to email@example.com. The following Cane Card form must be completed and signed by authorized personnel in order to be granted a Cane Card.There is a fee for the Cane Card for non-UM personnel.
If the department is paying the fee, an IDR must be brought to the ID Office at the time when the card is issued.
How do I take care of my Cane Card?
A damaged card will not pass through electronic scanning equipment. Protect your card by doing the following:
• Carry it in a wallet (not eel skin)
• Do not use as a tool for any reason
•Do not punch holes in it
•Avoid exposure to any type of magnetic force, including stereo equipment
•Avoid running cards through clothes dryers and washing machines
Students can deactivate their card online via Canelink. Employees can do the same via MyUM. Lost or stolen cards can also be reported to the ID office at 305-284-3096 during the week. Lost or stolen cards may also be reported to security 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 305-284-6666. The card will immediately be deactivated to prevent it from being used by unauthorized persons.Lost or stolen cards will be replaced for a fee. Damaged cards will be replaced for free upon exchange of the original broken or non-working card.
