Professor
Risto Hilpinen was educated at the University of Helsinki. He joined the UM
Philosophy Department in 1985. He has been Professor of Philosophy at the
University of Jyvaskyla (1970-71) and Professor of Theoretical Philosophy
the University of Turku (1972-99), and has held visiting professorships at
the University of Rochester, Stanford University, Florida State University,
and the University of Graz, and research fellowships at Stanford University,
the University of Queensland, Harvard University, and the University of
Pittsburgh. His areas of interest include epistemology, deontic logic,
philosophy of action, philosophy of science, and the philosophy of C. S.
Peirce. He is the author of Rules of Acceptance and Inductive Logic (1968)
and of some 100 articles in scholarly journals and books, and he has edited
several books and journal issues on deontic logic and the philosophy of
science. He serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals and
was, from 1983 to 1991, Secretary General of the International Union of the
History and Philosophy of Science, Division of Logic, Methodology and
Philosophy of Science. He is a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and
Letters and of Institut International de Philosophie. He is currently
working on projects related to the philosophy of action, epistemic logic,
and the pragmatic theory of meaning and knowledge.
