The Project Management Office (PMO) operations are focused on the following objectives: Providing Project Management services and oversight for select IT projects; mentoring, training, and guiding the organization’s project teams as they learn and then adopt project management practices throughout their projects; serving as UMIT’s authority on IT Project Management practices, and being the resident advocate and model for good Project Management practice.
In order to achieve these objectives, the PMO is supported by three pillars: Governance, Applications Project Management, and Infrastructure Project Management. Governance is the pillar that supports PM policies, procedures, business analysis, metrics, and portfolio management. In short, it represents the strategic arm of the PMO. The Applications and Infrastructure Project Management pillars are where the project specialists and managers reside. The project managers assigned to these areas are responsible for the operational aspects of project management and delivery.
In order to provide project management services, the PMO has standardized a framework based upon best practices for project management as outlined by the Project Management Institute.
