Earth week encourages environmental awareness and sustainability

From April 22-26 the Student Government Energy and Conservation Organization (ECO) Agency is hosting Earth Week. Events and giveaways are held daily on the Rock and around campus.

“ECO is glad to host Earth Week and work with other student organizations to promote environmental awareness among the student body” said ECO Chair Kamal Daghistani. “We hope to show how effective and easy it can be to change our habits.”

Monday, April 22
Hug the Lake – noon to 12:20 p.m. – Lake Osceola
Students join together and hug the lake to show solidarity and support for environmental issues. All students attending receive a free t-shirt.

Giveaways – noon to 4 p.m. – UC Rock
ECO is handing out free Panera sandwiches and kettle corn. There is also a rock-climbing wall and prizes for students who reach the top of the wall.

Tuesday, April 23
Free Smoothies – noon to 4 p.m. – UC Rock
Students who bring a reusable mug receive free smoothies made with solar powered smoothie makers.

Wednesday, April 24
ReUse table – noon to 2 p.m. – Farmers Market
The ReUse table is back by popular demand. Any items students or faculty wish to donate like books, clothes, or electronics are accepted. Anything that has been donated by others is free to take and “reuse”.

Thursday, April 25
Yoga Lesson – 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. – Foote Green
There is a free yoga lesson taught by a certified instructor.

Friday, April 26
Make your own terrarium – noon to 4 p.m. – UC Rock
Supplies are available for students to make their own terrariums to celebrate Arbor Day.

Over the course of the week, there are Recycling Fairies patrolling campus, handing out free t-shirts and other prizes to students they see going out of their way to recycle.
