Category 5 Ready To Rekindle Historic Football Rivalry

August 31, 2013 — University of Miami —

Student Government’s Spirit Programming Board, Category 5, has two events planned this week to promote Hurricane spirit and tradition for this weekend’s rivalry game against the University of Florida.

On Tuesday, September 3 at 9 p.m., Category 5 is screening an extended version of “The U” documentary at Cosford Theater on the Coral Gables campus. The film, with interviews of past coaches and players, details the history of the University of Miami’s legendary football program and serves as a reminder to students of the historic the UM-UF rivalry. This extended version was not shown on ESPN.

On Friday, September 6 at 6 p.m. there is a pep rally at the Student Activity Center Patio. The first official event at the SAC Patio, the pep rally features the Band of the Hour, UM cheerleaders and Sebastian the Ibis. There are numerous games and activities planned with prizes like gift cards to the Rathskeller. Category 5 is also giving out themed t-shirts to students and encourages all UM fans to wear white to Saturday’s game. In addition, the 2014 Homecoming theme is to be announced at the pep rally.

“The ‘Beat the Gators’ Pep Rally will offer a unique and exciting experience for students,” said Andrew Wyatt, Category 5 chair. “The athletic department and Category 5 teamed up to give out a special white shirt to every student in attendance to prepare them for the ‘White Out the Gators’ theme at Saturday’s game. I hope to see everyone there to get ready to cheer on our team as they crush the competition the next day.”

President Shalala and Brock Berlin will be guest speakers at the pep rally.  Berlin is a former University of Miami quarterback best known for his heroic comeback against the University of Florida in 2003, when the Hurricanes offense scored 28 unanswered points in the final 21 minutes of the game and defeated the Gators 38-33.
