STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASKS: “CAN U BUILD IT?”

November 14, 2011 — Coral Gables, FL —

This week, Student Government (SG) announces the start of the first ever “Can U Build it?” canned food drive and castle building competition. SG asks that teams of students join together and collect canned goods all week and at 12:15 PM on Monday, November 21st, the food drive will culminate with a building competition on The Rock.

Unlike most campus events, team formation is independent of C.O.S.O. registration so the event is open to any and all students that would like to support this cause. SG encourages each floor of Residential Colleges, commuter groups, Greek organizations and any other student group on campus to form a team and collect canned goods to build the winning structure. To participate, teams must register with Melissa Guller, SG Executive-at-Large External, by e-mailing her at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

After collecting canned goods all week, teams of students will have one hour on Monday to build the largest and most creative ‘Can Castle’ that will be judged on both size – the amount of cans collected and used – as well as the design of the castle. The team with the winning castle will receive up to ten $20 gift cards for each team member to The Rathskellar. Also, Greek organizations that collect over 100 cans will receive a letter detailing their involvement in this philanthropic event that can be sent to their national offices.

Once the structures are judged, the canned goods will be donated to South Florida Food Banks to support families in need of assistance during the Thanksgiving holiday. “I saw this event as a great way to bring the UM community together in a way that not only shows school spirit and togetherness, but also gives back to the families of South Florida during the upcoming holiday season” said Guller.
