Ashley Kelly Memorial Bridge is Approved by Miami-Dade Commisioners

The Miami-Dade county commissioners approved the plan to start to build the Ashley Kelly Memorial Bridge. Here is a timeline of the events leading up to this moment:

1989-1998: Five UM students struck by vehicles while crossing US 1, two deaths

April 11, 2005: Ashley Kelley struck by vehicle while crossing US 1 at Mariposa Ct.

April 12, 2005: Ashley Kelley dies as a result of her injuries

April 13, 2005: UM Student Government Senate passes the Ashley Kelly Resolution calling for an overpass to be built across US 1

August 1, 2005: University of Miami administration approves Ashley Kelly Resolution

June 2005-May 2006: UM Student Government collects more than 2,500 signatures on petition calling for an overpass

2006-2013: Miami-Dade County and City of Coral Gables work with US Department of Transportation to secure funding, design the overpass, and approve its location Negotiations with University Centre Plaza owners regarding construction plans

2010-2012: Two UM students injured when struck by vehicles while crossing US 1

March-April 2013: UM Student Government collects more than 2,200 signatures on Change.org petition asking University Centre Plaza owners to allow construction of Ashley Kelly Memorial Bridge

July 2, 2013: Miami-Dade Commissioners approve plan to build the Ashley Kelly Memorial Bridge
