Hispanic population in U.S.

Dr. Thomas Boswell, Chairman of the Dept. of Geography and Regional Studies, in the College of Arts and Sciences, studies Hispanic and West Indian populations in the U.S. He is currently teaching a class this semester entitled “Immigration to the United States” and will be teaching “The Immigration Debate in the United States: Is it Good or Bad for America?” during the second summer session. He has research and teaching interests in world population problems, migration, ethnicity, housing segregation and discrimination, and poverty. He has been a Research Associate with the Research Institute for the Study of Man in New York City (1973-74) and the Director of the Policy Center of the Cuban American National Council in Miami (1993-97). He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York City.

Elizabeth M. Aranda, Ph.D., assistant professor of sociology, specializes in immigration, U.S. Latino populations, and issues of race, class, and gender inequalities. Her research has been published in scholarly journals and she recently published a book on Puerto Rican migration. She is available to discuss Latin American immigrants in South Florida and their transnational activities.

Human Rights, International Law Issues

Steve Schnably, Professor of Law, can discuss the human rights issues involved in preventing the rafters from getting to shore and possibly endangering their lives. He can also comment on international law questions involving the legality of such activity by the Coast Guard.
