Empower Your Managers
The Essentials of Leadership program is designed to advance the development of the University’s managers through interactive modules, leadership discussions, individual assessments, experiential learning activities, and coaching. Upon successful completion, participants will have the tools and foundational knowledge they need to become transformational leaders who understand how their contributions affect the University’s broader strategy.

The six-month program is offered once each quarter to candidates who are recommended by their supervisors. Participant Requirements
During the six-month program, participants must attend all the modules assigned for their cohort. They must also complete a Managerial Assessment of Proficiency (MAP), an Individualized Leadership Development Plan (ILDP), and any additional activities as required. They should also meet with their supervisors for at least 30 minutes after the completion of each module to discuss the skills learned and how they can be applied in the workplace.

Supervisor Requirements
In order for the program to be successful, it is vital for supervisors to actively participate. They must attend the initial program overview/orientation and Module 1 with the candidates. Additionally, they should:

• Support the participant’s attendance to all scheduled sessions
• Discuss workload expectations in advance,
• Model the competencies expected from the participant
• Hold participants accountable for follow-through
• Provide opportunities for participants to practice and apply new knowledge, skills, and abilities learned, and provide coaching and feedback

Program Objectives
The Essentials of Leadership program will allow participants to:

• Understand the University’s core purpose
• Understand the role and expectations of a manager at the University of Miami
• Gain insight on their existing leadership strengths and weaknesses through an assessment of managerial proficiency
• Understand their role in advocating and supporting others through change
• Learn how to initiate and sustain a team environment to maximize productivity and engagement
• Gain confidence in handling difficult conversations with team members, peers and senior management
• Empower staff through effective delegation, feedback and specific accountability measures
• Understand the legal aspects of managing talent
• Expand their professional network and collaborate with managers across the university

Who is eligible to participate in the Essentials of Leadership program?
The Essentials of Leadership program is designed for managers in supervisory roles. Newly hired or promoted leaders will be required to attend the program as part of the onboarding process.

How do I enroll in the program?
To participate in the program, you must be recommended by your supervisor, who must complete a
program commitment form. If you are a manager in a supervisory role and are interested in enrolling, we encourage you to discuss this program with your supervisor.

How do I make a recommendation for participation in the program?
As a supervisor, you may recommend your direct report by completing a program commitment form.

How long does it take to complete the program?
The program lasts six months and includes a blend of four interactive modules, leadership discussions, individual assessments, experiential learning activities, and coaching.

How much does the program cost?
This program is offered to UM managers at no cost.
