Emerging Leader program
Practicing Leader program
Admission into the Emerging Leader program is available bi-annually. This program is offered to high performing employees who are recommended by their supervisor. Applicants must meet a minimum of two years work experience within the University, and one year within the sponsoring department. They must also meet/exceed expectations rating on their last performance evaluation, and have no performance issues in the past year. Supervisor commitment is required.
To enroll in the Emerging Leader program:

- Candidate must submit a Statement of Interest. Click on link to complete the Statement of Interest form http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CBP_SOI
- Supervisor and Candidate complete the application packet and submit it to PDTO by the application deadline (contact PDTO at 305-243-3090 to obtain application deadline information). The application packet has two parts: the Candidate Application to be completed by the candidate, and the Supervisor Recommendation to be completed by the supervisor. Only completed application packets received by the deadline will be considered. Note that the supervisor and candidate must complete a Competency Based Overview CBL in http://ulearn.miami.edu as part of the application process.
- The application is reviewed, and prior to the start of the semester, candidates and supervisors are notified via email of program acceptance or rejection.
- Once approved, the candidate will register for an Emerging Leader orientation session to gain a thorough understanding of the program requirements and expectations.
- Supervisors are engaged and required to participate in the candidate's development.
- The participant then completes 3 series of core classes. Each series consists of a six month period or semester. All series include competency related learning activities, as well as, Facebook group collaboration discussions, learning labs, and case studies.
- Lastly, the emerging leader will submit the e-Portfolio they have worked on and submitted throughout the 3 core series, to prove competency in all 8 leadership core competencies (e-Portfolio is reviewed and approved by a committee of University leaders prior to certification being awarded).
- If candidate completes all requirements successfully the program duration is 18 months.
Admission into the Practicing Leader program is available bi-annually. This program is offered only to employees in supervisory positions (anyone with direct reports i.e., supervisors, managers, directors).
To enroll in the Practicing Leader program:
- Submit a Statement of Interest. Click on link to complete the Statement of Interest form http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CBP_SOI
- Complete the Leadership Academy Overview CBL in ulearn.miami.edu
- Complete Practicing Leader Orientation. Click ulearn.miami.edu to register.
- Complete a series of core courses, representing the knowledge and skills every UM leader should master.
Those courses include:
- Performance Improvement Management Series
- Hiring and Onboarding Talent Series
- Introduction to Transformational Leadership
- Staff Needs Analysis
- Coaching for Performance
- Ethics and Credibility
- Building Change Ready Teams
- Leading a Culture of Service
- Ethics and Internal Controls
- Complete a Core Case Study
- Decide whether to complete the program at this point and receive a silver certificate, or continue the program.
- Complete a competency gap analysis to determine strengths and areas of improvement.
- After assessing your areas for improvement, you will develop a customized plan to target and develop those areas. This is called a Professional Development Plan (PDP).
- Review PDP with your supervisor
- Work on PDP goals; participate in learning labs.
- Reassess gaps and update PDP.
- Submit an e-portfolio, which will prove your proficiency in all 8 leadership core competencies (e-Portfolio is reviewed and approved by a committee of University leaders prior to certification being awarded).
To recommend your high performing employees to participate in the Emerging Leader Program or Administrative Support Program:
Meet with your prospective candidate(s) and discuss participating in a competency based program. PDTO advises recommending no more than two employees that report directly to you, to ensure that you can support them in their development efforts.
