Well ’Canes Farmers Market open this Wednesday

Coral Gables (November 19, 2010) — With Thanksgiving only two days away, University of Miami employees, students, and neighbors can find many of the culinary selections they need for the holiday right on UM’s Coral Gables campus.

The Well ’Canes Farmers Market, an initiative of the Office of Human Resources and UM Student Government, will be open for business this Wednesday, selling healthy items such as locally grown and organic produce, baked goods, artisanal cheeses, local honey, marinades, ceviche, pasta, and more.

Since its opening in mid-October, the market has proven to be a popular draw with members of the UM and local communities, attracting people from all over. “I look forward to it every week,” says Adoración Carrillo, an administrative assistant at the School of Law. “I enjoy perusing the tents, buying from our locals, and sharing community with our fellow UM family.”

Robyn Hardeman, secretary of the Faculty Senate, calls the market “a pleasant diversion. I meet my son, who goes to school here, every Wednesday, and we buy food and stroll along and talk.”

Kathleen A. Gaunt, assistant director of graduate business programs at the School of Business Administration, grew up shopping at farmers markets, enjoying their atmosphere and the wide selection of choices. She enjoys UM’s Well ’Canes Farmers Market not only for the choices available but also because she likes “supporting the local farmers, artists, and food vendors.”

“It was a great idea to get this going on campus, and judging from the crowds, it’s been well received by students, faculty, and administrators alike,” Gaunt says.

“It’s fabulous to have fresh produce right outside the door,” says Liliana Davidson-Tower, senior director of development for UM Libraries, who shops at the market every Wednesday.

Even UM President Donna E. Shalala, Senior Vice President for Business and Finance Joe Natoli, and many of UM’s other top administrators have visited the market.

Stop by this Wednesday, November 24 to shop for some of your Thanksgiving staples. The Well ’Canes Farmers Market is held every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Foote University Green between Starbucks and the Richter Library. The last market for the fall season will be held on Wednesday, December 15. It will resume on Wednesday, January 19, 2011.
