United Black Students to host week of programming activities in honor of the civil rights activist
Coral Gables (January 17, 2013) —
United Black Students (UBS) of the University of Miami presents “The Mountain Top,” the 2013 celebration in honor of civil rights pioneer and Nobel Peace Prize winner Martin Luther King, Jr. The national holiday in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. will be observed on Monday, January 21.
UBS festivities will kick off on Tuesday, January 22, with a week of programming and events planned to run through Wednesday, January 30. All members of the University community are welcome to attend.
Tuesday, January 22: Opening ceremonies will take place at 7 p.m. in Shoma Hall at the School of Communication's International Building.
Thursday, January 24: “UNLearn: The Narrative,” held at 7 p.m. in the International Lounge (I-Lounge) on the second floor of the Whitten University Center.
Saturday, January 26: MLK Day of Service. Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at the University Center (UC) Rock Plaza. The day of service is part of a national call to service initiative that calls for Americans to work together and serve their neighbors and communities.
Monday, January 28: In conjunction with the Butler Center for Volunteer Service and Leadership Development, today’s events will lead into Social Justice Week. The Social Justice Week Kick-Off will take place at 11 a.m. at the UC Rock Plaza. The “Diversity & Social Justice Discussion” will be held at 6 p.m. in the Master’s Apartment at Stanford Residential College.
Tuesday, January 29: A nonprofit networking event will be held at 5 p.m., followed by the “Children’s Issues and Human Rights Panel” discussion at 7 p.m. in UC Ballroom A.
Wednesday, January 30: Closing ceremonies at 7 p.m. at the UC Rock Plaza.
The 2013 celebration is co-sponsored by Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA), Unity Roundtable, Social Justice Committee, and the Butler Center for Volunteer Service and Leadership Development.
