June 11, 2009 — Coral Gables — The University of Miami has partnered this year with Shake-a-Leg Miami, a unique, nonprofit community-based aquatic activities center that serves children and adults with physical, developmental and economic challenges and No Barriers USA, a nonprofit organization that assumes that everyone, regardless of age, state of mind or physical condition, has a thirst for adventure and a hope for the future.
From June 4- 7, the partnership will help present the No Barriers Festival, featuring motivational speakers, continuing education unit seminars for healthcare professionals, showcases of adaptive technology, and opportunities for people with disabilities of all types to experience a variety of recreational activities that would not traditionally be available to them. In addition, on Friday April 17, Erik Weihenmayer, known for being the only blind man to climb the 7 tallest summits, including the peaks of Mount Everest, will be speaking on UM’s campus to promote the No Barriers Festival.
WHEN / WHERE:
Erik Weihenmayer will be speaking at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 17at the University of Miami’s Bill Cosford Cinema. UM students are invited via the Butler Center for Leadership and Service on campus to a private discussion with Weihenmayer. From 4:30 to 6:00 Erik Weihenmayer will present a second inspirational session, culminating with highlights for the upcoming No Barriers Festival. The Festival will be held from Thursday June 4 through Sunday June 7 at Shake-a-Leg Miami’s facility, located on Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove.
