UM Named a Bike-Friendly University

League of American Bicyclists recognizes UM for its bike-friendly initiatives.

Coral Gables (April 09, 2012) — The University of Miami has been recognized as a Bike Friendly University (BFU) by the League of American Bicyclists, joining a small group of elite schools that have also earned the honor.

“As universities compete for students and status, becoming more bicycle‐friendly is a winning strategy that energizes and invigorates staff and the student body,” said Andy Clarke, president of the League of American Bicyclists. “By making cycling safe and enjoyable, BFUs are both educating and empowering the next generation to adopt smarter, healthier transportation habits that will last a lifetime.”

Now in its second year, the program has grown to 35 campuses in 21 states. Click here to see the full list of Bicycle Friendly Universities.

Honored with a bronze award designation, the University of Miami is the only school in Florida to be recognized. Many of the schools on the list are members of the AAU (Association of American Universities).

“The University of Miami joins an elite group of schools enhancing mobility around campus and the community, and this recognition from the League of American Bicyclists is a great opportunity for the U to continue our efforts to decrease our carbon footprint and encourage alternative methods of transportation on campus,” said Richard Sobaram, UM’s director of Transportation and Parking, a member of the University-wide UBike Committee.

The UBike Committee, which consists of students, faculty members, and administrators from various units and divisions, meets regularly on issues affecting bike safety and transportation on UM’s campuses. More bike racks on campus, wider sidewalks, and free bike locks provided by the UM Police Department are just some of the results of the UBike Committee’s efforts.
