CORAL GABLES, Fla. (October 01, 2013) —
The University of Miami family mourns the loss of loyal Miami Hurricane and longtime UM trustee, Nicholas A. “Nick” Crane. A two-time graduate (BBA ’51 and JD ’53), Mr. Crane was a devoted father and grandfather, a successful businessman, and a caring community leader.
“Nick Crane was thoughtful, smart, and just plain nice. He never gave up on his community or his beloved ‘Canes. He will be missed,” said University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala.
Mr. Crane held a special passion for his alma mater and was generous with both his time and his resources. He was elected to the University of Miami Board of Trustees in 1986 and was named a Senior Trustee in 1998. Throughout his 27 year tenure on the board, he served on numerous standing committees, including Executive; Academic Affairs; Athletic Advisory, which he chaired from 1990 to 1993; Finance; Investments; and Student Affairs. He was also a member of the University of Miami Hospital Board of Governors and served on the Visiting Committees of the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Business Administration, Communication, Law, and Nursing and Health Studies.
President Shalala noted that Mr. Crane was a legendary Miami Hurricanes enthusiast. “Whenever the ‘Canes leave the field or the court, I will remember his smile, in victory or defeat,” she said.
Mr. Crane provided generous support to a wide array of university initiatives, including Athletics, the BankUnited Center, and the School of Business Administration and was a member of the George E. Merrick Giving Society. The Della Crane Classroom at the Graduate School of Business Administration is named in memory of his late wife. He is survived by two children, who are also Hurricanes, Lisa A. Crane, B.B.A. '87, and Nicholas A. Crane, Jr., B.B.A. '79; a sister, Marian "Mary" Stabler; and a granddaughter, Rachel Reyes.
Mr. Crane founded and was president of Neff Machinery, a wholesaler of construction and utility equipment, for 46 years. He was active in the local community and served as president of both the Orange Bowl Committee and the Rotary Club of Miami. He also supported the Boys Town of Florida and was past-president of the Executives’ Association of Greater Miami.
