January 22, 2013 — Coral Gables — University of Miami administrators, student leaders, and employees of Moss & Associates celebrated camaraderie and accomplishment on January 14, gathering at the construction site of UM’s new Student Activities Center to don the popular 2012 game-day T-shirts worn by students during Hurricanes home football games at Sun Life Stadium.
Moss & Associates, which is building the 119,000-square-foot center, co-sponsored the T-shirts along with the Coca Cola Company. Students from Category 5, the spirit programming board of the University, designed the shirts—8,000 of which were sold last semester, with proceeds benefiting the United Way. A student competition to design the 2013 game-day T-shirt will be announced soon.
“We’d like to thank the Moss & Associates team for their years of commitment, friendship, and support of the University,” said Adriana Verdeja, director of development in the Division of University Advancement and External Affairs, noting that the firm is also building UM’s new Schwartz Center for Athletic Excellence.
Meanwhile, work on the Student Activities Center continues toward its fall 2013 opening. Made possible by a $20 million lead gift from the Fairholme Foundation, the facility will include gathering places, programming space, a student organizations suite, retail outlets, a new Rathskeller, and other features.
UM Student Government President Nawara Alawa, who was among those present for the T-shirt group photo last week, said the new center will be “a game changer.” She noted that an advisory council consisting of students from across the University has been involved “every step of the way” in the center’s creation, from making decisions on policies the new facility will abide by to determining what kind of furniture will go inside its study areas. “It’ll be the new heartbeat of our campus,” Alawa said.
President Donna E. Shalala, Senior Vice President for University Advancement and External Affairs Sergio M. Gonzalez, Vice President for Student Affairs Pat Whitely, and Student Government President Nawara Alawa were among the UM representatives at the T-shirt photo op. Bob L. Moss, founder, chair and CEO; Joe Harris, executive vice president; and Scott Desharnais, senior vice president, were among those from Moss & Associates.
