August 27, 2012 — Coral Gables — (9:00 a.m. Update) Classes, events, and most operations on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables and Rosenstiel campuses remain closed today. Plans are to resume all normal operations tomorrow (Tuesday). The Coral Gables campus closure includes the Gables One Tower, with the exception of clinical staff and operations serving the medical campus.
The campuses are safe and secure, although they remain closed. Employees are not requested or expected to report to work today, except those persons who have been specifically notified by their supervisor.
Some limited services will open today for students on the Coral Gables campus:
Wellness Center: 12 p.m.-12 a.m.
University Center (UC Pool and Bookstore will be closed): 12 p.m.-11 p.m.
Student Health Center: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Dining Halls:
Breakfast Continental: 8-10 a.m.
Lunch: 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Dinner: 4:30-9 p.m.
Retail Operations:
Starbucks: 9 a.m.-closing
Convenience Stores (UV and UC): 9 a.m. until closing
Subway (School of Law): 9 a.m.-12 a.m.
Richter and Law Libraries: 12-10 p.m.
Clinical locations of the University of Miami Health System—including University of Miami Hospital, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, UMHC-Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and all satellite clinics—will be open for appointments all day today. This includes any procedures and clinical appointments at the University of Miami Hospital. Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Naples, however, remains closed. Classes for first- and second- year Miller School students have been cancelled today. All non-clinical research and administrative staff should not report to work today. The UM Canterbury Preschool on the medical campus will be open.
Members of the University community are urged to monitor the UM homepage, the Emergency Preparedness website, the Emergency Information Hotline at 1-800-227-0354, and local media for updates concerning University activities and operations that could potentially be impacted by the storm.
The University Crisis Decision Teams continue to assess the situation on the campuses and another Storm Alert will be issued at 7 p.m. tonight.
The following are some action guidelines for after the storm:
- Students and employees should contact family members by any available means and advise them you are okay.
- Employees are encouraged to check in with their supervisor or designee to inform him/her your status and where you can be reached.
- Remain inside until local or University Officials say it’s safe to leave. If you must go outside, be cautious of fallen objects and downed electric wires.
- Await further instructions from University Officials

Faculty, staff, and students are asked to regularly monitor officialcommunications issued by the University. The latest information is posted on the UM homepage and the Emergency Preparedness Web site at www.miami.edu/prepare. Information is also available at the University’s Emergency Information Hotline at 1-800-227-0354. Emails will be sent in the form of dated Storm Alert advisories.
All members of the UM community should take steps to ensure that the University can communicate with you in case a storm or some other emergency threatens our area. Make sure the University has your current contact information by verifying your profile (Personal, Address and Emergency/Evacuation Information) on myUM. When a situation warrants, mass text and voice messages and emails containing emergency information will be sent.
After a storm: Students, faculty, or staff who are forced to evacuate or temporarily relocate to another area should notify the University of their new location and contact information by going to https://recover.miami.edu.
