May 15, 2008 — Coral Gables, FL — University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala has announced that Sergio M. Gonzalez is now the Senior Vice President of University Advancement and External Affairs. Gonzalez has served as the Vice President for University Advancement since 2001. In that role, he led the effort for the record-breaking campaign Momentum: The Campaign for the University of Miami. The campaign was launched in 2003 to raise $1 billion and by December 2007 had surpassed the goal to close out at $1.4 billion. Mr. Gonzalez also oversees communications, government relations and alumni affairs for the University.
"Recruiting Sergio Gonzalez seven years ago to our team was crucial in the ongoing transformation of the University of Miami into one of the best research institutions in the country,” said President Shalala. “The Momentum Campaign surpassed all our expectations due in great part to Sergio's skills and dedication. We are all grateful for his leadership.”
Gonzalez was instrumental in a majority of the leadership gifts of the campaign and during his tenure at the University has led the division in breaking numerous fundraising records and attaining national fundraising awards, including most recently the Grand Gold Award, one of two in the country, in the 2008 Circle of Excellence Awards sponsored by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). This award will be presented to him in New York in July in recognition of the success of the Momentum Campaign. This week, Gonzalez was also presented with the Professional Advisor of the Year Award from the Planned Giving Council of Miami-Dade County for his leadership of UM’s Momentum campaign. Under his leadership, UM became the first university to reach the billion-dollar milestone in the state of Florida, and one of the youngest in the nation to embark on this endeavor. Of the universities in the United States that have run billion-dollar campaigns, UM is the only private University established in the 20th Century to achieve this high mark. According to the Council for Aid to Education, the University moved up in rankings in fundraising from 54th in 2002 to 33rd in 2007 among public and private institutions and from 24th in 2002 to 18th in 2007 among private institutions in the country.
Prior to his appointment at UM, he served as Chief of Staff to Miami-Dade County Executive Mayor Alex Penelas. Before then he served as Director of the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee and Director of the Miami Dade County Homeless Trust.
Gonzalez is a South Florida native and holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and a Juris Doctor from Columbia University. He is a member of the Florida Bar. He resides in Coral Gables with his wife, Patricia Andreu.
Momentum: The Campaign for the University of Miami is a billion-dollar effort to accelerate progress; empower learning and discovery; and intensify the University’s impact on people in the city, across the country and around the world.
