UM Celebrates the Year of the Dragon

Students, faculty, and visitors celebrate Chinese New Year with host of cultural events.

Coral Gables (January 31, 2012) — The University of Miami was awash in yellow and red on Monday evening as hundreds of students, faculty, staff members, and visitors celebrated the Chinese New Year, ushering in the Year of the Dragon with a festival that included performances, food, and music.

Held on the University Center patio, the event marked the first time in UM history that the institution’s Chinese Student and Scholar Association and Asian American Student Association celebrated the Chinese New Year.

Dragon dance teams performed; tents featured displays of various aspects of Chinese culture, such as the tea ceremony, Chinese opera display, arts and crafts, calligraphy, and regional dress; and attendees feasted on dumplings, which are typically eaten during the New Year’s celebration. President Donna E. Shalala gave opening remarks.
