UM Alumnus and Urban Farmer Will Allen to Appear on The Colbert Report

UM alumnus Will Allen, farmer, founder, and CEO of Growing Power and author of the newly published book The Good Food Revolution: Growing Healthy Food, People, and Communities

(June 12, 2012) — University of Miami alumnus Will Allen, farmer, founder, and CEO of Growing Power and author of the newly published book The Good Food Revolution: Growing Healthy Food, People, and Communities (Gotham Books), will make a guest appearance on the popular television program “The Colbert Report.” The show will air Tuesday, June 12 at 11:30 p.m. ET on Comedy Central. It will also air on Comedy Central on Wednesday, June 13 at 1:34 a.m., 10:01 a.m., and 6:51 p.m.

Allen, who was UM’s first black basketball player, played professionally in the United States and Europe. He received an honorary degree at UM’s May 2012 commencement ceremony.

Allen will discuss his life’s work in urban agriculture and how he came to author his well-reviewed and critically acclaimed autobiography. Stephen Colbert’s interview of Will Allen will be a treat to all.

Of Allen’s book, President Bill Clinton says, “Through The Good Food Revolution, Allen recounts his effort to reclaim his family’s heritage and, in doing so, confronts lingering disparities in racial and economic justice. “The Colbert Report” launched on October 17, 2005 and has garnered ratings and critical success as one of the top shows on television. Since its inception, the series has received a prestigious Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting in 2008 and 18 Primetime Emmy nominations. In 2010 Colbert and his writing team won the show's second Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music, or Comedy Program.
