To the University of Miami Family,
I am saddened to share the passing of a great member of the University of Miami family, Jim Bauer. Jim fought a long and valiant battle with cancer and passed away last night while in hospice care at the University of Miami Hospital. Our deepest sympathies go out to his wife Lois, who is a member of the Registrar’s office, and his three daughters.
Jim’s leadership as Senior Associate Dean of Enrollment Management and Executive Director of the Office of Financial Assistance Services touched so many people. Thousands of UM students benefited from his caring and sense of fairness. He was a true professional, a key player, and leader in the ambitious climb in rankings of the University. More than anything else, he had a soft heart in a tough job.
He was beloved by his staff and colleagues, who were astounded at Jim’s resolve to not miss work despite being very sick. Jim joined the University 13 years ago, and he had a long and distinguished career in financial assistance and enrollment management. He was nationally recognized in this field as a visionary and ethical pioneer who always put students first.
Those who worked closely with Jim admired and respected him tremendously, and his loss, as a friend and a manager, will be felt by so many. Please join me in expressing our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time. Jim will greatly be missed.
