Sitar Virtuoso Irshad Khan to Visit UM Frost School of Music

The Arts Presenting program of the University of Miami Frost School of Music will present a performance of Indo Jazz world music with renowned sitar virtuoso Ustad Irshad Khan on April 4th, 2011.

Coral Gables (February 11, 2011) — The Arts Presenting program of the University of Miami Frost School of Music will present a performance of Indo Jazz world music with renowned sitar virtuoso Ustad Irshad Khan on April 4th, 2011 at 8 PM at Maurice Gusman concert hall (1314 Miller Drive, Coral Gables)

Irshad Khan is considered among the world's best sitar players and the leading surbahar (bass sitar) player of his generation and among the finest instrumentalists in the world.  His performance will consist of a mix of traditional Indian music and indo/jazz fusion compositions accompanied by an ensemble of Frost School students.  Led by Irshad Khan's super virtuosic sitar performance, this revolutionary musical style has created a ground-breaking east-meets-west theme, which is a combination of Indian traditional to contemporary jazz, blues, to world-beat funk, new-age, folk/fusion.

Irshad Khan descends from a legendary, musical family heritage dating back over 400 years.  His family has been paramount in the evolution of the sitar into its present form; and his great-great grandfather Ustad Sahebdad Khan is credited with the invention of the surbahar (bass sitar).  Irshad's ancestors have been among the best musicians and leading sitar players of India.  Recognized as a child prodigy, today Irshad has emerged to be among the most sought after and versatile Indian musicians and captures audiences all over the world with his breathtaking virtuosity and profound musicality.  Irshad has performed in over 30 countries on 5 continents; has over 20 commercial albums for sale internationally and has been praised by reviewers everywhere – being referred to as the “Mozart of Indian music”.
