School of Communication Productions Receive Emmy Nominations

October 31, 2011 — Coral Gables — UMTV, the University of Miami’s cable TV channel and the work of UM School of Communication students have been nominated for two Emmy Awards by  The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Suncoast Chapter.

UMTV was recognized for the Nov. 18, 2010 edition of NewsVision, produced by Alejandro Fonseca and Danny Parra, School of Communication alumni who graduated in 2010. SoC students were also recognized for “Redrawing Miami,” a class project created for Professor Edward Julbe’s media production course. The project looks at how Miami’s Wynwood Arts District is slowly but surely redefining the city as an arts-rich metropolis. Jessica Macias was the executive producer for “Redrawing Miami,” which was created by a team of students, including Jaclyn Gulmi, Ryan Gurrentz, and Keenan Warner and recent alumni Drew Appolonia, Maggie DeBarberie, Patrick Edmond, and Lauren Grazioso.

“The Emmy Award recognizes the very highest quality work. All of us, students and faculty, who work on NewsVision are pleased to be nominated for this award,” said Professor Andrew Barton, a faculty advisor for UMTV.

“It’s truly humbling to see our hard work recognized by the top media professionals in the area,” added Parra, now a writer forWSVN-Channel 7 in Miami. “I’m so happy to say that I was one of many people who worked together to create two incredible products.”

NewsVision features local, state, national, and international news with reports produced by UM students. The program broadcasts live every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 p.m.

Professors Ellen Fleysher, a veteran news reporter and multiple Emmy-award winning producer; Edward Julbe, a seasoned television and video production professional; and Andrew Barton, a veteran news manager, serve as advisors for NewsVision. Natalia Crujeiras is director of broadcast operations for UMTV and the School of Communication. NewsVision was nominated for an Emmy in 2009 and 2005, and won the prestigious award for “Best Student Program” in 2002.

Redrawing Miami aired on UMTV. Last year it won “Best Video Documentary” at the National Broadcasting Society annual production competition.

“The class is honored to receive this recognition and appreciates the acknowledgment of their tireless efforts,” Julbe said. “Jessica Macias, the project’s executive producer, not only conceptualized the initial idea for the project, but effectively communicated the plans to her classmates and saw the project through to its successful completion.”

Suncoast Emmy Award winners will be announced on December 3, during a ceremony at the Westin Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale.
