Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Releases Fall Course Schedule

October 07, 2009 — Coral Gables — The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Miami has released its schedule of classes for the Oct. 26-Dec. 4, 2009 fall session. There are over 24 classes in creative arts, languages, computers and lecture courses for intellectual enrichment, as well as several special interest groups. Each of these programs are designed to accommodate a relaxed learning style and make it easy for anyone who has been away from the formal learning environment for many years.

Creative arts classes include Comedy Improv and Beginning or Advanced Digital Photography. Comedy Improv teaches the basics of games similar to the ones seen in improv comedy shows like “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” The class is open to students with all levels of acting skills. This class will also teach intimate team-building and respect. Beginning Digital Photography guides students on how to develop photos by using PhotoDeluxe and photos taken from a digital or a 35mm camera. Whereas, Advanced Digital Photography takes students further in the art of photography by studying composition and practicing photography around the city.
Language classes include different levels of Spanish and French. Spanish, Beginning II develops basic Spanish skills while Spanish, Intermediate is a more detailed version of the other Spanish classes available at OLLI. The Refresher French course allows students with prior knowledge of French to jump back into the language.
Computer classes allow for a better grasp on the ever-changing technology in our society. Peripherals and Social Networking teaches students how to connect to their computers through “add-ons,” MP3 players and the various social networking options.

The lecture courses touch upon various areas of study including Cultural Explorations, Adventures in Journalism and Religious Traditions. Cultural Explorations reaches out to a different performing arts group each week to learn about their operations, dreams and upcoming season. Adventures in Journalism brings in distinguished print, radio and television journalists to discuss their diverse and colorful careers, contemporary issues and the rapidly changing media environment. Religious Traditions explores various religions from around the world. Weekly guest speakers will voice their religion’s theological view of God, how they observe significant holy days and their religion’s view of afterlife.

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are classes/meetings organized and operated by OLLI students. They are created to bring together students who share a particular interest. The current SIGs are the Fun with Yiddish Lunch Group, Crafty Lunch Group and Spanish Lunch Group. All students are welcome to join one of these groups or organize their own.
