June 18, 2012 — Coral Gables — With proud parents, families, and friends looking on, nine members of the University of Miami Global Academy’s (UMGA) second cohort of graduates accepted their diplomas during a commencement ceremony held at the Newman Alumni Center on June 8. They are now alumni of an innovative online high school that allows students from anywhere in the world to take classes taught via the Internet and through technologies such as Skype and Blackboard.
The event was the highlight of a week of activities that included a reception, awards luncheon, National Honor Society induction ceremony, and shark-tagging excursion through UM’s RJ Dunlap Marine Conservation Program.
Members of UMGA’s Class of 2012, nine of whom participated in the graduation ceremony, will attend such schools as UM, Arizona State, Michigan State, NYU, Penn State, and the University of California Santa Barbara.
This year’s graduates included: Bruno Andres, Dilay Bayraktar, Eric Preston Funk, Felipe Cordeiro Gussoni, Stone Woranon Hewitt, Signe Lazdina, Dalton Samuel Loy, Caroline Elliott Murphy, Margaret Catherine O’Mara, Jonathan Michael Papeika, Kenia Vasallo Soto, and Victor Roberto Yanes.
UMGA is a program of the University’s Division of Continuing and International Education.
