CORAL GABLES, Fla. (April 09, 2014) — The new Student Government president for the University of Miami is no stranger to participating in SG meetings and working with campus administrators on a variety of projects and initiatives.

Alessandria San Roman, elected SG president in February, has served on SG’s executive board for the past two years. Now a rising senior at UM, it is her turn to take the lead.

San Roman – a Miami-native majoring in political science – served during her sophomore and junior years as SG’s executive secretary and executive-at-large internal, respectively. These positions gave her the opportunity to understand the inner-workings of the organization and take on special projects throughout the year, she said.

“I've been able to learn the ins and outs of how our organization functions and it's role in the UM community,” said San Roman. “Working on numerous projects during my time in SG has exposed me to the ways students and administrators can best work together.”

The new executive board officially took office at SG’s annual Inauguration Banquet held on Wednesday, April 7 in the Student Activities Center ballroom. In her inauguration speech, San Roman outlined her “vision” for the upcoming year as president.

“Tonight . . . we all begin our work to unite ‘The U’,” she said as a nod to her campaign slogan: Unite the U. “We have the duty to leave our campus in a better place than we found it when we first stepped foot here.”

In addition, San Roman’s speech included a preview of some initiatives SG plans to tackle in the coming year. These plans include facilitating connections between student groups by taking advantage of the new student organization suite in the SAC, building stronger relationships between faculty and students, and strengthening SG’s presence on campus.

“We want to begin a movement and encourage future ‘Canes to continue working together to create a better campus,” said San Roman.

In addition to the new SG president, members of the 2014-2015 SG executive board include:

Vice President – William Herrera
Treasurer – Dariel Fagundo
Chief of Staff – Jesus Melendez
Executive-at-Large External – Brittany Stephenson
Executive-at-Large Internal – Daniela Lorenzo
Speaker of the Senate – Brianna Hathaway
Speaker Pro Tempore of the Senate – Ishtpreet Singh
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court – Ricardo Fraga
Elections Commission Chair – Symon Rowlands
Category 5 Chair – Shelly Morse
Environmental Conservation Organization Chair – Benjamin Slavin
Executive Secretary – Ryan Donahue
Press Secretary – Julie Earl

Before being officially sworn into office, incoming officers used the month of March to meet with outgoing members and transition into their new roles. San Roman met with the outgoing SG president Bhumi Patel as well as members of campus administration including Patricia Whitely, vice president for Student Affairs. President Donna E. Shalala also meets with the SG executive board before the summer break so she can get an understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives for the upcoming year.

San Roman said, “It’s easy to say that the president serves as the face of the student body but there’s so much unseen work that goes with that. I learned from Bhumi the importance of effectively managing my time as president and always remember that I am a student first.”
