May 20, 2011 — Coral Gables — The march toward a new era of enhanced student life and involvement has officially begun, as construction on the University of Miami’s new 119,000-square-foot Student Center Complex is now under way. Moss & Associates, the contractor for the project, has already begun to initiate the necessary steps that signal the project’s long-awaited start, installing a site fence, locating utilities, and unearthing and relocating trees in the area.
The construction site encompasses Gusman Concert Hall and extends to the edge of Lake Osceola. While pedestrian access along the lake in the vicinity of the construction area will be cut off beginning Monday, May 23, a detour has been arranged for foot traffic, which will be rerouted north to Miller Road and around Gusman Concert Hall and the Ring Theatre. A protected pathway along the University Center is being erected.
When completed, the new center will include various gathering places, programming space, a student organizations suite, retail outlets, and a new Rathskeller, ramping up the on-campus experience not only for students but also faculty and staff.
