Miller School Appoints Chief Innovation Officer

(September 06, 2011) — A nationally recognized leader in innovations in health care, Jonathan “Jack” Lord will join the University of Miami in September as chief innovation officer and professor of pathology at the Miller School of Medicine.

Lord is currently chairman of the Board of Directors of Dexcom, a leader in new technologies and improvements in the field of diabetes and glucose control. Previously, Lord served as chief innovation officer for Humana, creating Humana’s Innovation Center, which combined research, product design and consumer experience engineering and is unique in the health benefits industry.

During his time at Humana, he also significantly advanced predictive sciences by using advanced analytics to predict who will become ill in the future and how illness can be prevented. Lord also oversaw the creation of the UM/Humana Health Resources Center on the Miller School campus in 2006.

In his new role as chief innovation officer, Lord will have specific responsibilities for the University of Miami Life Science & Technology Park, the UM Tissue Bank, and UM Innovation, which is the home of technology advancement at the University and serves to nurture and integrate comprehensive research initiatives. In addition, he will work with faculty across the University and the Office of Technology Transfer to advise and assist on commercialization of discoveries and intellectual property.

“The experience that Jack Lord brings to the University will enable us to take the discoveries we are making in our laboratories across all the campuses and get them to the people who need them as quickly as possible,” said Thomas J. LeBlanc, executive vice president and provost of the University of Miami.

“Jack Lord has a wealth of knowledge in the area of innovation in the biomedical arena and the health benefits industry,” said Pascal J. Goldschmidt, senior vice president for medical affairs, dean of the Miller School of Medicine, and CEO of UHealth-University of Miami Health System. “He has a proven track record of developing industry-leading products and innovations across a wide spectrum of health care.”

Before joining Humana, Lord was president of Health Dialog, a Boston-based Internet provider of health information. Previously he was chief operating officer of the American Hospital Association; executive vice president of the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland; and executive vice president of Sun Health in Charlotte, North Carolina.

A board-certified forensic pathologist, Lord began his medical career in the U.S. Navy, where he spent 11 years on active duty.

“It is an exciting time to return to the University of Miami,” Lord said of his appointment. “The opportunity to work with the University’s leading-edge faculty, continue to drive the development of the Life Science & Technology Park, and create new businesses across all campuses comes at a time when the investments in these programs can really be leveraged.”

Over the course of his career, Lord has published articles on topics ranging from risk management and quality assurance to prostaglandin biosynthesis. In 2002 he received the Karen Coughlin Individual Disease Management Leadership Award from the Disease Management Association of America for his contributions to advancements in the care of millions of Americans with chronic disease. Lord, a fellow of the College of American Pathologists, is also a member of the advisory board to the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta and a past board member of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

A double alumnus of the University of Miami, Lord received his bachelor of science degree in 1973 and his medical degree in 1978. He also has been a member of the University of Miami President’s Council since 2006 and is the parent of an alumnus from the School of Education, Class of 2010.
