UM initiative sets its sights on projects in Allapattah and Overtown.
Coral Gables (June 10, 2013) — The University of Miami’s Office of Civic and Community Engagement (CCE) has received $75,000 from Chase to support its affordable housing initiative. The grant will fund projects and partnerships based in the Overtown and Allapattah neighborhoods of Miami.
The community initiative will address issues related to housing, education, public health, and community development and will help to craft a broad-based development strategy and solidify partnerships with stakeholders in the community.
“We truly are grateful to Chase for their generosity and commitment to community development,” said Robin Bachin, UM’s assistant provost for civic and community engagement. “Through their support, we will work collaboratively with community organizations that already have done extraordinary work in these neighborhoods and bring UM resources [to those communities], including research on best practices in urban revitalization, strategies for producing cohesive urban design, and mapping tools to identify existing and potential sites for affordable housing.”
The grant will help establish community forums and asset mapping, high school partnerships in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields, workforce development partnerships and career pathway guidance, a substandard-housing survey, and a resource center. The grant is part of Momentum2: The Breakthrough Campaign for The University of Miami, which has raised more than $1 billion to date for scholarships, research, and outreach programs.

The Office of Civic and Community Engagement works to enhance University and community collaboration by engaging the University’s academic resources in the enrichment of civic and community life in local, national, and global communities. The goal of the program is to develop a comprehensive community development strategy shaped by promoting collaboration and creating long-term partnerships.
Since its entry into the market nearly five years ago, Chase has been steadily growing in South Florida. To date, the bank has 161 branches locally—72 in Miami. As part of its growth, the bank is committed to supporting local Florida nonprofits. It invested $6 million in 2012, supporting neighborhood revitalization, workforce development, and community stabilization projects.
