November 02, 2011 — Coral Gables — Thousands of alumni from around the country will travel back to South Florida to join current students, faculty, and community members to celebrate the University of Miami’s Alumni weekend and Homecoming 2011 festivities.
Returning alumni will have the opportunity to reconnect with former classmates at the reunion parties on Alumni Avenue on Friday, November 4th. This block party will feature entertainment, food, and spirits and will take place from 8:00-11 p.m. at Eaton Lakeside Lot on the Coral Gables Campus.
In addition, UM's annual homecoming parade kicks off at 7 p.m. Grand Marshal, Maggie Rodriguez, B.S.C. ’91 (most recently Co-Anchor of CBS's The Early Show and a substitute anchor for Katie Couric on the CBS Evening News), UM President Donna E. Shalala, Sebastian the Ibis, the Band of the Hour and Hurricane Cheerleaders will join colorful floats on the parade route.
The spirited parade route starts at the beginning of Stanford Drive and extends past the Eaton parking lot on UM's Coral Gables campus. Families and future ‘Canes can also enjoy a crafts, games, giveaways at the ‘Canes Kidsville, at 5 p.m. on the University Center Rock.
Immediately following the parade will be a pep rally (8:15 p.m.) and one of UM's most cherished traditions, the boat burning ceremony and fireworks (8:25 p.m.) along the waterfront of Lake Osceola in the center of campus. The boat burning ceremony involves setting a wood boat on fire in the middle of the lake. The tradition states that if the mast breaks before the boat sinks, UM will win the Homecoming football game. This year's football game is against Duke University on Saturday, November 5th at 3 p.m. at SunLife Stadium.
The UM Homecoming parade, boat burning ceremony and fireworks display on November 4th are free and open to the public.
