(August 23, 2012) —
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has been recognized as a Center of Excellence by the Myelodysplastic Syndromes Foundation for its research, diagnosis, and treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), a bone marrow failure syndrome that can result in acute leukemia.
Under the leadership of Stephen D. Nimer, director of Sylvester and chair of the foundation’s board of directors, the cancer center is making strides to advance worldwide research on MDS and provide excellence in diagnosis, treatment, education, and supportive care for MDS patients.
“We are delighted with our designation as an MDS Center of Excellence, and hope to continue to provide education and outstanding care to patients with MDS in the local, regional, national, and international communities we serve,” Nimer said.
Sylvester is one of only five institutions in the state and the only one in South Florida to earn the designation.
